Pell & Bales CWU rep sacked

Issue No. 2108

Pat Carmody, a CWU union rep at the Pell & Bales call centre, has been sacked by his employers for writing a short article in Socialist Worker.

The article was a report of anger among workers at the company following the suspension of a colleague for allegedly “scowling at the carpet”.

The CWU is planning a campaign to win Pat his job back. Pat told Socialist Worker, “My sacking is an attack on trade unionism and freedom of speech.

“Over recent years we have built up union membership at Pell & Bales from just a handful to over 120. In that time we won the first significant pay rise in over six years.

“Workers for many of Pell & Bales customers – mainly charities and voluntary sector organisations including Oxfam, Cancer Research and Unicef – will be horrified at this attack, and the union intends to make them aware of what is going on.”

Please send a message of protest to Karl Holweger, chief executive at Pell & Bales. Email and send a copy to union activists at
