Human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar cleared of contempt

Issue No. 2108

There was cheering on the steps of Edinburgh’s high court on Tuesday morning as supporters heard that civil rights lawyer Aamer Anwar had been found not guilty of contempt of court.

Aamer was charged after reading from a statement on behalf of his client Mohammed Atif Siddique, who was sentenced to eight years on charges relating to terrorism.

Aamer is well known as a human rights lawyer willing to take up controversial or difficult cases.

After Tuesday’s hearings he thanked his many supporters and added, “An independent defence able to speak without fear of recriminations by the state is essential for freedom and justice.”
