Tightfisted New Labour industry secretary Stephen Byers increased the minimum wage this week-but only by 40p. Byers announced the rate for over 21 year olds is to increase by nearly 11 percent. That will take £3.70 an hour to just £4.10 an hour.
Bharti Patel, the director of the Low Pay Unit, says, '£4 an hour is still not enough to lift people out of poverty wages.' And there is still a separate, lower, rate for workers under the age of 21.
UNISON's Campaign for a Living Wage is organising a march and concert in Manchester on Saturday 28 April.
The march assembles at 11.30am at Whitworth Park and ends with a rally in Albert Square. The bands playing at the evening's concert include Catatonia and Toploader. For tickets, which cost £10, ring 0161 930 8000.
