College victory

Trade Unionists at Basildon College in Essex have won a final victory over Basildon College Corporation, with the announcement of the resignation of the principal, Chris Chapman. He was responsible for creating a climate of bullying and intimidation. The resignation was the result of a determined struggle by students, trade unionists and local socialists.


Minister heckled

Over 250 pensioners heckled Home Office minister Charles Clarke at a public meeting in Norwich last week, organised by the Norfolk and Norwich Pensioners' Association.


Nurses furious

Nurses in the Royal College of Nursing are threatening industrial action at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. They are furious at overcrowding in the accident and emergency department. An RCN spokesperson said patients were often left on trolleys and corridors: 'Nurses cannot give patients the best care, or even privacy and dignity, and safety is being compromised.'


Steely protest

Steel workers in Scunthorpe at the BOS plant have started an overtime ban, withdrawal of good will, and working to maximum safety. The BOS plant is a key production unit in the Scunthorpe works. The overtime ban is in protest at job cuts demanded by the BOS plant management under the current round of job reductions in Corus.


Boss in dock

The manager of Euromin, James Martell, was facing trial on charges of manslaughter this week over the death of Simon Jones, a 24 year old casual labourer on Shoreham dock. Simon was killed at work at a Euromin-owned dock in 1998.

Anger on the box

UNIONS ARE preparing to ballot workers at TV company Carlton for action over pay. Members of the BECTU, NUJ and AEEU unions could join the action. They are angry that 'the company has treated them with contempt' says Trish Lavelle, a national officer with BECTU.
