Strike against Bolton academy

Issue No. 2109

In an important fight over city academies, members of the Unison and NUT unions at the Hayward school in Bolton have voted to strike over plans to transfer the school out of local authority control and transform it into an academy.

The strike will take place next Tuesday 15 July.

Unison members at the Withins school in Bolton, where NUT members have already taken two days of strike action over the plans, will also strike on 15 July.

The NUT at Withins is considering further action and the ATL union at Hayward is also considering action.

The strikes will be the first of their kind by Unison and reflect a ratcheting up of the campaign against academies.

The NUT teachers’ union in Southwark, south London, and the Anti Academies Alliance have organised an event to mark the ending of community secondary education in the area.

At midnight on Sunday 31 August, Southwark will become the first local authority in England to surrender control of its secondary schools to the church and private sector.

We are campaigning to bring the academies back into local authority control and for new schools planned for Southwark to be democratic, community schools.
