The Tory led Local Government Association, representing all councils across England and Wales plus a list of other key local authority and professional organisations, has endorsed the Defend Council Housing’s key demands in a new hard hitting report.
At the same time the TUC managed to produce a report on housing that airbrushed council housing out of its list of demands, even though congress last September passed two strong motions in favour of council housing.
This reflects strong pressure from government on trade unions to back off from the “fourth option” to build new council homes.
Ministers are also clearly worried and embarrassed at the scale of support for DCH amendments submitted by Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) to Labour’s Partnership in Power policy consultation (» Brown shows his true colours on trade union laws).
At least 28 CLPs have submitted DCH amendments and all major unions have policy backing the set of demands.Tenants and trade unionists are invited to attend a Defend Council Housing meeting at Parliament on Monday 14 July at 6pm, Grimond Room, Portcullis House, to discuss the government’s review of council housing finance.
