Nottingham Trent University to end union recognition agreement

Members of the UCU lecturers’ union at Nottingham Trent University are angry at management’s announcement that they are giving three months notice to end the current recognition agreement.

This is despite the current agreement stating that nine months notice is required to do this. The university is trying to impose a new framework for consultation and negotiating.

This will weaken UCU’s rights to representation and introduce staff reps who must declare they’re not members of any union. The university also wants to halve the amount of facility time for union representatives.

The union and its members have responded brilliantly. Sally Hunt, UCU’s general secretary, has sent an angry response to management.

Thousands of UCU members have signed an online petition. An indicative email ballot for strike action in the autumn is running at six to one in favour. Management have responded by asking for an “urgent meeting”.
