Around 60 council workers in the Unison union in Haringey, north London, walked out of work on Tuesday of last week after two union activists were suspended.
Mark Tindley and Sheila Amaneer in Haringey’s Benefits and Local Taxation section were suspended and charged with gross misconduct. The council has accused them of intimidation and harassment during the local government strike in July.
Haringey TUC president Keith Flett said, “This is not the kind of behaviour we expect from a Labour council and the suspicion must be that whatever harassment has taken place is likely to be by management.”
Workers have now voted to begin a work to rule. Unison’s branch committee unanimously passed a motion last week to ballot workers in the Benefits and Local Taxation section over the suspensions and has said that it will not tolerate management bullying.
