Death in custody: how did Sean Rigg die?

Issue No. 2118

Investigations are underway into two recent incidents of black men in south London dying after either being chased or arrested by police.

Sean Rigg was arrested on 21 August on suspicion of public order offences.

He was taken to Brixton police station at 8.15pm. According to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Sean became ill while being held in the custody suite.

An ambulance was called and Sean was taken to King’s College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9.24pm.

Sean’s sister Samantha has appealed for witnesses who may have seen Sean being arrested or in the police station.

She said, “The family is deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely death of our brother while in police custody.”

Just days later on 30 August 15 year old Reece Robinson-Webber died when he came off his moped in Tulse Hill while being chased by police.

According to the local paper, Reece was on his way to a 50th birthday party when police tried to pull him over and then chased him.
