Socialist Worker

Issue No. 2119

Set in Beirut, this film explores the lives of five working class women in modern Lebanon. It is set in a beauty parlour called So Pretty.

Layale, Nisrine and Rima work in the salon, while Jamale is a regular client and Rose works in the dressmaker’s shop next door. They all face different but real pressures.

The film highlights their resourcefulness and humour as they struggle against these.

Writer, director and actor Labaki finished the film just as Israel invaded Lebanon in summer 2006. She continued with the film as a way of “surviving the war”.

Directed by Nadine Labaki
