More than 100 workers at clothing manufacturer J Barbour and Sons in South Shields, took to the picket line on Monday as part of a series of one day strikes over pay.
The majority of workers are on the minimum wage of £5.52 per hour.
One machinist said, “Last year we got a £1.87 increase per week, which worked out at less than 10p per hour, but they never changed the flat rates on our wage slips, instead they put it in as an ‘adjustment’.
“And now this new wage will incorporate the adjustment so really, we’re getting an even worse increase than they’re saying. All we want is a minimum of £6 per hour. It’s not that much really.”
Workers say their targets are up from previous years. They are also unhappy that they’re fined if they take a day off. The workers are set to strike every Monday for the next three weeks.
