Protest against Nazis organised for Stoke

Issue No. 2119

The Nazi British National Party (BNP) has called a national demonstration in Stoke-on-Trent for this Saturday. Party leader Nick Griffin is the keynote speaker.

The BNP are desperate to present Nazi activist Keith Brown as a “martyr” who died for the Nazi cause.

He was in fact a vicious racist who subjected his neighbour Habib Khan to years of racial harassment and violent abuse.

Brown was fatally stabbed after a fracas with Khan, who confronted him when he saw Brown holding his son by the throat.

Stoke is a key target seat for the BNP, with the party having nine councilors there. They believe they can win the mayoral election next May.

Labour in Stoke was a model Blairite operation but it has seen its membership and vote collapse as working people react against its free market policies.

The demonstration in Stoke takes place during the major anti-war demonstration in Manchester, with the Nazis hoping this will give them a clear field.

Local campaigners need to make sure there is a serious mobilisation against the Nazis.

Mobilisation

Unite Against Fascism, Norscarf and other anti-racist groups in the area have called for a counter mobilisation assembling at 10am this Saturday, 20 September, outside the Civic Centre in Hanley, Stoke.

Meanwhile activists are fighting against the Nazis in other areas of the country.

The BNP are standing for the first time in a council by-election in Hampstead, north London on Thursday of next week.

Previously the ward has returned three Tory councillors. The move is part of the BNP’s attempt to move upmarket and appear more respectable. It is also a provocation standing in an area with a significant Jewish population.

Scottish anti-fascists are campaigning against the BNP candidate in the Baillieston council by-election in Glasgow, which was to take place on Thursday of this week.

Meanwhile BNP member Angela Reid has stood down as their candidate for Braintree District Council in Essex.

A statement said she had withdrawn, because “people would call her a Nazi and slag her off”.

This shows the importance of campaigning by organisations like Unite Against Fascism to make sure everyone knows that the BNP are really Nazis.

Reid is the daughter of the late Mike Reid of EastEnders fame.
