The war spreads deep into Pakistan

Issue No. 2120

Who is responsible for the massive blast that levelled the Marriot hotel in Islamabad? Authorities blame Islamic militants, others claim it is a plot by Pakistan’s security services.

We may never know the truth. But ultimate responsibility lies with George Bush, Gordon Brown and the other Nato leaders.

They have been desperate to extend the war in Afghanistan into neighbouring Pakistan—in so called “hot pursuit” of Afghan rebels.

For the last two years unmanned drones have been raining death on the border regions. Now there are regular incursions of western troops and helicopter gunships while the Pakistani military have launched an offensive on the tribal areas. Thousands have died and hundreds of thousands have fled. This dangerous spread of war can only plunge the region into further chaos. For there to be a chance of peace the occupation of Afghanistan must end.
