The US, cluster bombs and 'weapons of mass destruction'

Issue No. 2121

You might have thought George Bush’s administration had enough on its hands with the financial meltdown, but last week it was announced that the US air force is pressing ahead with a new generation of “intelligent” cluster bombs.

War planes would deliver swarms of flying bombs with the power to chase a moving target for up to five minutes.

Indiscriminate use of cluster bombs is set to be banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions, due to be signed by 109 countries in Oslo this December. The Bush administration is refusing to sign up, along with Russia and China.

These are weapons which overwhelmingly kill civilians. It speaks volumes for Washington, Moscow and Beijing that they are happy to profit from these weapons of destruction.
