The London Fire Authority has announced a 15 percent budget cut on all non-front line services. This has led to management proposals to make 28 staff redundant in six months, including three Unison shop stewards.
An emergency Unison branch committee on Wednesday of last week expressed shock and fury that such savage cuts could be made without any union consultation.
Everybody understood if management were allowed to get away with these cuts then many more would follow with the unions put in the position of being virtually powerless.
The Unison meeting agreed we would start an indicative ballot to build support for strike action after a Unison branch meeting on 16 October.
We needed to be prepared to take strike action. It was agreed that we would have a regular across unions action committee which would campaign against the redundancies and invite other unions to Unison shop and branch meetings.
It was also recognised that we should try to get support from the FBU and that management would undoubtedly get round to cutting fire fighter’s jobs as well.
