New Labour’s murky ‘coalition’

Issue No. 2124

Some commentators have taken recent noises emanating from Downing Street as an indication of a “leftwards shift” by the government.

Anyone seduced by this notion should pay attention to Peter Mandelson’s first pronouncements after returning to government – a series of attacks on the rights of workers and women.

Far from moving to the left, Gordon Brown has simply returned to his earlier theme of a “government of all the talents”.

That means incorporating the left with warm words – and incorporating the right by sending in Mandelson to do the bidding of big business.
