Hotel chef Virgilio Teixira wins reinstatement

Issue No. 2124

Hotel chef Virgilio Teixira has been reinstated after his wrongful sacking in July (see » Sacked head chef cooks up protest, 16 August).

He was unfairly dismissed from his £20,000 a year job at the Arora International Hotel in Heathrow after the chef due to take over the next shift didn’t show up for work.

Virgilio had to leave work on time to look after his young children, but offered to return when their care was assured. Nevertheless the hotel sacked him.

Throughout his campaign, Virgilio received fantastic support from fellow workers at the hotel – many of whom are migrant workers.

Membership of the GMB union grew during the campaign as people saw the support and strength that union membership could give to workers.

Perry Phillips is the GMB branch secretary who represented Virgilio.

“This is great news for Mr Teixira and a full demonstration of the need of workers to belong to the GMB,” he said.

“The management realised that they have to take account of their employees’ family commitments.”
