The higher education (HE) sector of the UCU union meets on 7 November to discuss the pay claim that we will be submitting to our employers.
Our current three-year deal comes to an end in August. Managers are already talking about using the recession as an excuse to limit our pay.
We should submit our pay claim as soon as possible. We need a substantial percentage element, in case the RPI rate of inflation falls and we begin to fall behind average wages.
An RPI-linked pay claim will allow us to make common cause with other public sector unions.
We also need to demand that comprehensive equal pay reviews are completed by December 2009, with action to close identified pay gaps.
Assimilation of hourly paid staff is central to our claim. It is also part of our wider campaign against casualisation of the HE sector.
