Appalling injustice for Chagos islanders

Issue No. 2125

British justice last week delivered another blow against the Chagos Islanders when the law lords voted by three to two against their right to return home.

The British government forced 2,000 islanders, all British citizens, from the archipelago in the Indian Ocean in the late 1960s and 1970s to create a US airbase.

Britain and the US have used every possible avenue to defend the airbase now sited on the island of Diego Garcia, which has been used in the “war on terror”.

The law lords’ judgement made it clear that, for the system they uphold, the rights of imperial nations will always come above human rights.
