The London region of the UCU education union initiated a meeting last week to discuss organising a joint trade union response to the recession.

Representatives from the NUT, Unite, UCU and PCS unions and the People Before Profit Charter attended.

All agreed that trade unions will need to be at the heart of resistance to the attacks on working people’s living standards. We had a fruitful discussion and arrived at a possible plan of action.

George Bush is hosting an economic summit on 15 November to discuss how to rescue the world economy.

The meeting proposed to organise an alternative People’s Summit. It was also suggested that we should organise a protest outside the treasury.
