Issue No. 2126

American writer and activist Studs Terkel died last week, aged 96.

He gave voice to working class people in the US, in books such as Working, Hard Times – on the Great Depression – and Race.

These were oral histories filled with interviews he had recorded with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

He was blacklisted under McCarthyism in the 1950s.

In the US he was also known for his long running interview show on Chicago radio.

Studs Terkel was interviewed by Socialist Review in 2006. Go to » www.socialistreview.org.uk/article.php?articlenumber=9708
