Student grant cuts attack on education rights

It is a disgrace that 40,000 students will no longer receive the grants that the government promised them. Outrageously the National Union of Students is yet to properly respond to this attack on higher education.

On Friday of next week an emergency demo will take place outside the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills in central London.

Students will come together to protest against the false argument of a £200 million “hole” in the government budget. We will show that, in the context of the bailout for the banks, we do not believe the lies about there not being enough money to pay for education.

Students’ needs should be put above profits – which means challenging the “free market”. We’re calling on all students to join the demo – including those who don’t receive grants.

As long as higher education is funded by individual debt rather than the government, we will face cutbacks, attacks on our course standards and ultimately an education at the mercy of the market.

Protest assembles 3pm, Friday 14 November, outside Westminster Cathedral, Victoria Street, London
