Environmental service workers in Brent vote for strike

Issue No. 2126

Workers at private contractor Veolia Environmental Services in Brent are balloting for strike action over a 3.3 percent pay offer.

The 168 workers are members of the GMB union, which is recommending rejection of the offer.

“3.3 percent is simply not enough,” said Tony Warr, GMB senior organiser. “It is no good telling these low paid, hard working employees, who do some of the most important jobs in the country, that they have to accept a pay cut.

“GMB has no hesitation in recommending that our members reject this abysmal offer and have every expectation that they will.”

The result of the ballot is expected on 21 November and if workers vote to reject the offer the first strike date is likely to be 1 December.
