Legal aid cut hurts poorest

Issue No. 2127

Legal aid, a crucial service that thousands of ordinary people rely on, is coming under attack.

The Legal Services Commission, which runs the legal aid scheme, announced last week that it will cut 600 jobs by 2011.

This will include shutting eight processing centres leaving only five remaining.

Jobs will start being cut next year.

The move comes at a time when increasing numbers face legal problems from house repossessions and other poverty related cases.

It is the unfairness of the legal system that creates the need for legal aid in the first place.

The cuts will make it harder for poorer people to get justice.
