Supporters of the People Before Profit Charter, which puts forward ten demands to improve the lives of working people in the face of economic turmoil, are mobilising for a number of important events.
Charter supporters in Newcastle have organised a rally against home repossessions in the city for this Saturday, which has won a wide range of support.
Simon Hall, who is helping to organise the rally, said, “A number of groups and networks are backing the rally, including the Keep Metro Public campaign against the privatisation of the Metro system, Public Services Not Private Profit, the North East Shop Stewards Network and the Tyneside Socialist Forum.
“There will be a range of speakers at the rally from the unions, public services and other groups. We plan to hand a letter into the local branch of the nationalised Northern Rock bank, which has its headquarters up here, demanding it stops house repossessions and job cuts.”
Charter supporters are also backing a protest called by the London region of the UCU lecturers’ union on Friday of this week against workers being told they must bear the brunt of the economic crisis.
The protest takes place outside the treasury in central London at 4.30pm on the eve of the meeting of the leaders of the world’s 20 most powerful nations in Washington to discuss the crisis.
Many expect that the meeting will pander to the interests of bankers and the bosses rather than the overwhelming majority of the population.
The protest demands that ordinary people are put first and that jobs, services, housing and pay are put before the profits of the rich.
The protest will be followed ten days later by a People’s Alternative Economic Summit on Monday 24 November in University of London Union, Malet Street.
The meeting will begin at 7pm. Speakers include Tony Benn, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Sasha Callaghan of the UCU and Tony Kearns, deputy general secretary of the CWU postal workers’ union.
This will give people the opportunity to make their case for what the government should do in the face of the meltdown.
