The Tragedy of Thomas Hobbes

Issue No. 2128

Award-winning playwright Adriano Shaplin's new play for the Royal Shakespeare Company brings to life the political and intellectual turmoil of London in 1658.

Oliver Cromwell, in the dying days of his regime, has stamped down on dissent and conspiracies are everywhere.

The Tragedy of Thomas Hobbes looks at the founding of the Royal Society and the casting aside of philospher Hobbes to achieve that.

Shaplin, a co-founder of the Riot Group theatre ensemble, has previously written Pugilist Specialist about the US war in Iraq.
