The Art Ensemble of Chicago was one product of the movement to create a so-called Free Jazz – a new sound to capture the feeling in black America in the 1960s.
Written as a soundtrack to a French underground film, this score has been unavailable for more than three decades.
The opening track, 'Thème de Yoyo', is an uncompromising assault on an as yet hidden enemy. It features Fontella Bass on vocals – who just a few years previously had been making pop-soul classics like 'Rescue Me'.
