Housing crisis: Fill the empty homes

Issue No. 2129

As the number of home repossessions rises, the scandal of empty homes is also increasing – there are almost 900,000 empty homes in Britain.

The Crisis charity has estimated that there are 400,000 “hidden homeless” people in Britain, on top of the almost 150,000 officially newly homeless households.

Councils have the power to take over homes left empty for over six months for no good reason. Some 375,000 homes in England have now been empty for this amount of time.

As the first step towards ending the housing crisis, all empty homes must be seized and handed over to homeless people.
