Derry occupation gets results

Issue No. 2130

Workers at Calcast in Derry, Northern Ireland, have won better redundancy pay after occupying their factory. The plant makes parts for Ford. Some 90 redundancies were announced there.

Worker Liam Helferty told Socialist Worker, “It was ordinary union members who decided to occupy the factory. We had known the news was coming and talked about what we would do. The union officials were slow to back us, but did in the end.

“There has been a trickle of redundancies over the past few years and we were laid off for three weeks in April.

“This is a real blow.

“But we’ve been able to come back in with a certain amount of pride after the occupation. We sent a signal to other workers that you can fight and win, and told the to employers that they can’t just walk over people.”
