Combating terrorism needs political will, not a military solution or draconian laws, more CCTV, and metal detectors.
The deeper roots of terror need to be understood. A solution would involve, among other things, the settlement of long standing conflicts in the sub-continent – India-Pakistan, Kashmir, communalism, and attacks on minorities.
But instead of this evaluation, the double-speak and hypocrisy of mainstream political parties continues. The ruling Congress Party talks of the responsibility of “neighbouring countries”, while the sham patriots of the Hindu right advocate the most divisive politics, even condoning the ethnic cleansing of minorities.
While we must totally reject terrorist “Jihad” in the name of Islam, we must also beware of Hindutva “revenge terrorism”. All forms of violence brutalise society. It is time that the people of Mumbai stood up and united, as Indians and human beings.
We must demand justice and peace – and we must fight for it.
