Taliban ‘slowly encircling Kabul’

Issue No. 2131

The Nato-led occupation of Afghanistan is coming under severe threat, with Afghan resistance forces led by the Taliban threatening to encircle the capital city Kabul.

That was the assessment this week of the International Council on Security and Development (Icos), a Paris-based thinktank that specialises in researching “conflict zones”.

Taliban forces have a presence in 72 percent of Afghanistan, up from 54 percent last year, says the Icos report. Insurgents are regularly attacking three of the four major roads into Kabul.

“The Taliban has been experiencing a renaissance that has gained momentum since 2005,” the report added. “The West is in genuine danger of losing Afghanistan.”
