Newham strike against academy

Issue No. 2132

A strike by around 50 teachers at the Royal Docks School in Newham, east London, closed down the school on Wednesday of last week. The teachers, members of the NUT union, were striking over plans to shut the school and reopen it as an academy.

The teachers are concerned that the move would involve job losses.

Teachers at the school voted unanimously for discontinuous strike action – meaning that more strike action may be taken to fight the academy plans.
