Around 450 people braved a cold evening in Preston on Sunday to demonstrate against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. The demonstration was called at less than 24 hours notice and organisers were delighted at the turn-out.
Mukhtar Master, who chaired the rally, said, 'We weren't sure how many people we could get out at short notice, at this time of the year. We are delighted that people have come out in such numbers. We hope that we are part of a global message: we will not stay silent as Israel carries out these murderous acts against the Palestinian people.'
Local politicians and imams addressed the very angry rally.
Socialist councillor Michael Lavalette got a great reception when he urged people 'to protest, demonstrate and raise the banner of Palestinian rights.' He added, 'The next few days are crucial. The Israelis intend to continue their barbarous attacks – we have a responsibility to highlight their lies, their atrocities and to make it clear that all decent people stand with the Palestinians and their struggle for freedom.'
