Medics struggle to get into Gaza

Issue No. 2134

As Gaza’s hospitals overflow with the casualties of Israel’s aggression, growing numbers of medical staff – including specialist trauma surgeons – are stuck in Egypt on the border with Gaza.

The medics are battling with the Egyptian authorities to be allowed into Gaza to offer medical assistance to the Palestinians.

One journalist on the border described how, “having been stranded on the Egyptian side of Rafah for five days, 15 Arab physicians were finally granted permission to enter the Gaza Strip. Numerous other medical teams from Indonesia, Turkey, and Greece remain stranded.”

The Egyptian authorities search every truck as a way of delaying crucial supplies attempting to enter Gaza during lulls in the bombardment.

Meanwhile convoys of aid, many funded with donations raised among ordinary Egyptians, are regularly turned back by state security forces.
