Sean Penn as Harvey Milk

There are a number of interesting and political films to see at the moment. Here are Socialist Worker’s recommendations.

Milk, features a superb performance by Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, one of the first out gay people to be elected in the US in 1977. It is released on Friday of this week.

Gus Van Sant’s film shows the homophobia of US society and the struggle against it. Milk was a radical, whose campaign for San Francisco supervisor received massive backing.

Milk fought against Proposition 6, an attempt to stop gay men and lesbians from working in California’s schools. This was defeated, but only a few weeks later Milk was assassinated.

Another film out this weekend that looks at the US in the 1970s is Frost/Nixon. It is a portrayal of the series of interviews TV presenter David Frost held with former US president Richard Nixon.

Nixon had been brought down by the Watergate scandal, after he ordered the bugging of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate building and then tried to cover it up.

Frost attempts to expose Nixon, the butcher of Vietnam and Cambodia, over four interviews.

A number of other good films that have been out for a while are worth making an effort to catch.

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire shows the contradictions of modern India. Jamal, a tea boy, is one question away from winning Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Suspicious police interrogate him to find out why he knows the answers.

Defiance, starring Daniel Craig, is an adaption of Holocaust scholar Nechama Tec’s book about Jewish Partisans in Poland in the Second World War. They resisted the Nazis and saved over 1,000 Jews’ lives.

Somers Town, Shane Meadows’ moving film about the friendship between Marek, a Polish immigrant teen, and Tommo, a Midlands runaway, has just been released on DVD.
