NUT teachers’ union rep and leading anti-academy campaigner Mac Andrassy was suspended from his job at Counthill school in Oldham on Wednesday of last week on a charge of gross misconduct.
Oldham NUT believes that Mac is being victimised because of his trade union activities and his anti-academy position.
Bryan Beckingham, joint branch secretary of Oldham NUT, said, “All the reps in the school feel under attack. There is a lot of pressure on members in the school.”
The ATL union rep at the school is currently on long-term sick and the NASUWT rep has also been put on competency procedures.
Teachers, former colleagues and other union members from Oldham and around the country have sent Mac messages of support.
He has taught at Counthill school for 17 years and has been central to the campaign to stop the school being closed and transformed into an academy.
The NUT is calling on all trade unionists to urgently campaign for Mac’s reinstatement.
