Amicus election to start soon

Issue No. 2136

Hundreds of thousands of workers in the Amicus section of the Unite union are preparing to vote for their general secretary.

The election, due to begin on 16 February, is taking place because the existing general secretary, Derek Simpson, is not legally allowed to stay in office past the age of 65 without it.

Whoever wins will be general secretary for a year, before the election of a general secretary for the whole of the Unite union, covering both the T&G and Amicus sections.

Following the withdrawal of Laurence Faircloth, who was backed by the Amicus Unite Gazette group, Socialist Worker supporters are now backing Jerry Hicks, a former Rolls Royce worker and former Socialist Workers Party member.

Activists are also preparing for the launch of the united left group in Unite in Birmingham on 18 February.
