Protest stops London speech by Israeli officer

Chanting “shame on you”, some 100 antiwar protesters blocked a meeting that was going to be addressed by Israeli colonel Geva Rapp last night.

The protest in central London was called at short notice after an email was leaked detailing how Geva Rapp was the “deputy commander” of land forces in the recent Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

The protesters staged a sit down outside the entrance of the Jewish Students centre on Euston Road after police ordered them to move to the other side of the road.

Police officers, some wearing riot gear and wielding batons, attempted to intimidate the protesters. But, the demonstration held its ground and dispersed only after the meeting was cancelled.

This protest is the latest in a series of demonstrations, sit-ins and university occupations that has marked the rise of a movement in solidarity with Palestine.

Police said that four demonstrators were arrested.
