Essex council puts services up for sale

Issue No. 2137

Essex county council intends to put huge swathes of council services up for grabs to private sector “partners”.

Its official notice asks private companies to provide “any and all council services”.

Kumar Sandy, regional officer for the Unison union, said, “The pilot flying this hare-brained scheme is Lord Hanningfield.

“His Lordship is a relic of the Thatcher years which privatised anything that moved.

“We have seen what Thatcherism has done to the railways and the utility services.

“While shareholders will cream off massive short-term profits from a few selected services, the people of Essex will face subsidising everything else for years to come.”

Essex Unison has called a lobby of the council on Tuesday of next week at 9.15am, outside County Hall, Chelmsford.

Workers in the Unison and GMB unions in Ashfield council in Nottinghamshire have passed a motion of no confidence in the council.

The action follows the announcement of job losses and £1 million worth of council cuts.

Workers demanded that the motion be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Thursday of last week but the leader of the council said he was too busy to take it. This has only angered workers even more and further protests are expected.
