Wage cut for Morning Star journalists

Issue No. 2137

Management at the Morning Star daily left wing newspaper effectively imposed a wage cut on its journalists last week.

The journalists, who are members of the NUJ union, are balloting for industrial action after management failed to close the pay gap with other national journalists. This is despite the paper receiving £500,000 in new investment.

Morning Star management representative John Haylett sent a letter to each member of staff, bypassing elected union reps, to inform them that a 3 percent pay increase will be imposed along with a one-off payment of 3 percent of their salary.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear has written to Haylett to insist that the union “cannot accept the unilateral imposition” of the below-inflation deal.

The ballot result is due on Friday of this week.
