The Handmaid’s Tale DVD

by Matthew Cookson
Issue No. 2138

This 1990 adaption of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel is finally being released on DVD.

The Handmaid’s Tale is set in the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic Christian regime set up after the destruction of the US.

The handmaid in question is Offred, who now “belongs” to one of the commanders of the regime. She is charged with bearing his child, as many women have now become infertile from the nuclear, biological, and chemical pollution of the war that destroyed the US.

Atwood wrote the novel half way through Ronald Reagan’s rule in the 1980s, and the story still has a lot to say to us today.

Watch this film or, better still, read Atwood’s brilliant novel.

The Handmaid’s Tale
Directed by Volker Schlondroff
DVD out 16 February
