Movement of solidarity for Gaza grows

Issue No. 2138

Activists across Britain have been stepping up activity around Gaza. Local initiatives have included meetings, collections in workplaces and street stalls to raise awareness and money for the people of Gaza.

Cardiff saw its biggest political meeting in over a decade when almost a thousand people attended a Cardiff Stop the War Coalition meeting in conjunction with Cageprisoners.

Former Guantanamo inmates Moazzam Begg and Omar Deghayes spoke alongside ex-US guard at the prison Chris Arendt.

Since the meeting, follow-up events have been organised across south Wales. On Saturday 40 activists distributed thousands of leaflets and collected around £400 for the DEC appeal for Gaza.

Meanwhile in Rusholme, Manchester, a group of residents, together with Stop the War Coalition and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a hugely successful benefit at a local community centre last Saturday.

Some £2,400 was raised with around 200 people packed into the community centre to enjoy an evening of live music and speeches.

Labour MP Gerald Kaufman spoke at the benefit. He said, “What is going on in the Middle East can’t be excused by saying Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Many of my family were killed in the Holocaust. They did not die to provide cover for Israeli Jews to kill Palestinians.”

He added, “The slaughter we have seen in Gaza is only the latest blood-soaked episode of many. In Gaza they have not got medical supplies or hospitals, they have not got schools to go to.”

The EIS Scottish teaching union gave £10,000 to Education International – which supports education across the world – to support learning in Palestine. Glasgow EIS branch gave £1,000 to Education International.

The Glasgow union branch also passed a motion calling for collections in schools for Medical Aid for Palestinians.
