General strike in Italy

Issue No. 2139

Millions of workers in Italy last week joined a general strike against attempts by the government and the bosses to make them pay for the economic crisis.

A thousand coaches and 16 special trains carried around 700,000 trade unionists and their supporters to a rally in Rome.

The protest was particularly well supported by engineering workers and civil servants.

“We should not have to pay for the mistakes of others – who profit off our backs,” said Juan Luis Finkbein, a metal worker from Brescia.
