Student occupations keep on spreading

Issue No. 2139

There have been a number of other occupations in the last week. Students at Goldsmiths, a university in south east London, occupied on Wednesday of last week.

The occupation won two scholarships for Palestinians every year for ten years. The university will fully fund these places.

A 55-hour occupation at Glasgow university from Monday of last week won a series of demands. This included an official collection day on campus for the Palestinians.

Students at Edinburgh university occupied on Wednesday of last week.

They left the occupation on Monday after winning many of their demands, including educational aid for Gaza, scholarships and a series of lectures on Israel and Palestine.

Elsewhere, students are being victimised for their activities.

At Sheffield Hallam university, the student union has suspended Matt Vicary, a sabbatical officer, after he was part of a group of students who occupied the stage in solidarity with the people of Gaza at a recent NUS conference.

No proper disciplinary procedures have been followed and Matt’s hearing has been suspended.
