Demanding a right to reply to England People Very Nice

Issue No. 2140

Artists, campaigners and community activists from London’s East End called a protest outside the National Theatre on Friday of this week to demand a right to reply to the play England People Very Nice.

The play parades a series of crude, racist stereotypes about communities living in east London.

The Irish are portrayed as alcoholics and wife beaters, while young Bangladeshis are painted as Islamic fanatics who celebrated the 9/11 attacks.

“We want a right of reply – a proper debate, not just a bland discussion between the director and the writer,” said Hussain Ismail, a local Bengali playwright who is coordinating the protest. “They haven’t got a clue about the real East End.”

Assemble at 5pm, Friday 27 February, outside the National Theatre, South Bank, London SE1. Bring whistles and drums. For details email [email protected]
