What you can do about job losses

Issue No. 2140

Every day brings new announcements of job cuts and closures. This is a volatile situation and individuals can make a difference.

A couple of people taking a stand can help turn the general mood from despair into one of confidence and militancy.

Here are a few demands you can make and steps you can take to fight job losses or support workers who have been sacked:

  • Strike the moment that job cuts are announced. As sacked BMW worker Doug Foreshew from Cowley argues in our front page story, it’s vital not to waste anger.
  • Follow the example of Waterford Crystal workers in Ireland and occupy. They look set to save their jobs by taking that action. Managers don’t care about workers – but they do care about plant, stock and machinery.
  • Get out and build physical and financial support in local workplaces and in the community. Organise a demonstration to rally support.
