Construction protests continue

Issue No. 2141

Protests are continuing at the Staythorpe construction site near Newark in Nottinghamshire and the Isle of Grain site in Kent.

The shape and direction of the protests is producing vigorous debate among workers following last week’s march in Staythorpe.

There is anger at the failure of union leaders to give a lead and the effect of the “British jobs for British workers” slogan. There is frustration over where the campaign goes next.

This will be discussed next Monday and Tuesday at the joint unions national shop stewards forum on the national agreement, which is expected to be stormy. Last week 15 workers attended a National Shop Stewards Network meeting in Sheffield to discuss the campaign.

There are plans for marches in Liverpool and London. Delegations of construction workers are joining the protests against the G20 on 28 March.
