“Our most recent four-day strike ran from Thursday to Sunday last week and it was absolutely solid. The strike has been well supported and all 140 NUJ members of the chapel have been involved in picketing and winning support.
“We’re having another one-day strike on Wednesday of this week and again on Sunday. We’re also going to be holding mandatory disruptive meetings in the office.
“The participation in the strike has been phenomenal – from winning the strike vote 109 for and three against, to seeing our membership grow over the strike.
“The public support has been fantastic too, with everyone beeping their horns to support us as they drive past the picket line.
“Local people have been brilliant. I think our fight has struck a chord.
“The company has made hundreds of millions of pounds in profits at our titles. It has paid this out for years to shareholders and directors in dividends and bonuses.
“At the same time it has borrowed hundreds of millions of pounds to fund an over-ambitious programme of acquisitions. The company’s debts are now ten times the size of its share value.
“Now it’s all gone belly up for them, they want us to pay for their mistakes with our jobs. But we’re saying no, and we’re fighting back.
“I hope other working people in other industries will fight back against job losses and cutbacks too.”
