Wigan Unison calls march for wages

Issue No. 2142

Wigan Unison members facing wage cuts and an assault on nationally held terms and conditions of service by the local council are pressing on with plans for a demonstration on 21 March.

The demo will begin in Mesnes Park and proceed through the town centre. Organisers hope it will be a rallying call to trade unionists and members of the public to resist the pressure to make them pay for the recession.

Tony Broxen, a Unison activist helping organise the demo, said, “Every worker in the town is under pressure.”

Unison is encouraging people to bring their families and children, homemade placards and union banners. A brass band from Haydock will lead off the march.
