Two days’ action at rail company

Issue No. 2143

Around 100 train conductors at London Midland depots in Bletchley, Watford and Northampton struck on Friday of last week and Monday of this week in a row over Sunday working.

The workers, in the RMT union, are angry over attempts to pressure staff into working on Sundays, which they say contradicts a longstanding agreement that allows them to opt out of Sunday working.

Workers were also angry at the company’s use of managers to cover the conductors’ safety-critical work.

Conductors receive three months of specialist training to carry out their jobs, whereas managers covering their work only received brief training.
